Great weekend for Blitzboks and Springbok Woman teams

The Blitzboks have secured gold at the Commonwealth Game on Sunday when they totally outclass Fiji in the Gold Medal match and the Woman Springbok side came back after a disappointing first test loss again Japan to beat them in the second test on Saturday.

After topping their pool the Blitzboks got the better of Australia in their semi final with 24-12.

They went into the break 12-all in an entertaining first half before the Blitzboks showed their class to book their spot in the final match.

The Aussies scored first when Nawaqanitawase powered through to put the Aussies 5-0 ahead.

Angelo Davids then showed why he was red hot in this games as he scored his eighth try after a very clever grubber from Selvyn Davids. That gave them a 7-5 lead.

The Aussies came back at them immediately to take the lead again 12-7 before Davids scored his second try of the half to even it up at 12-all at the break.

Selvyn Davids scored after halftime as the Blitzboks took the lead 19-12. It was Angelo Davids again that took the game away from the Aussies with his hat-trick try

In the final the Blitzboks left the best for last totally outclass and out played the Fiji team who was the favorites to take Gold.

The Blitzboks just dominated the play and with great attacks won the final 31-7.

Zain Davids, who took over the captaincy, said: “I have a little bit of mixed emotions at the moment, but mostly I’m happy as we came out here and gave our all, and I think we can be very happy with our performance against a great team like Fiji.

“When ‘Shakes’ got injured, I had to take over the captaincy and I was happy to do that, because I know the guys supported me, but I also knew that in this team you don’t really have to be a captain as you have a bunch of guys behind you that’s helping and supporting you.”

The Blitzboks led 17-0 at the break and never really looked like they will let the Fijians back into this one.

The Blitzboks tries came from Muller Du Plessis who scored twice, JC Pretorius, Shaun Williams and Mfundo Ndhlovu.

Fiji only try came in the second half when Nacugu got through the good Blitzboks defence.

On Saturday The Springbok Woman side turned the tables on the Japan when they beat them 20-10 in the second test match.

This was their first test win on foreign soil as they shared the series with Japan one all after two test matches.

This was after Japan beat the Springboks 15-6 in the first test last weekend.

The Springbok ladies had a 12-5 lead at the break after they played a much better attacking game this time around showing not just their strength but also their skills on attack.

Although the South African side was under pressure early on they managed to cope well and laid the foundation in that tight first half for the victory.

This was certainly a test series the ladies can build on and we expect them to grow as a team.
